The Musical Liberation Sensation Part 2: "Siuil A Run" - Clannad

It's that time again! For those not familiar with this segment, I basically pick a song and analyze its influence on me by breaking it down and relating it to my life atm. So here we go, again!:

When I first heard this song I stumbled upon it by accident. At the time I was looking for Albannach's old band Clann An Drumma and instead stumbled upon Clannad. This amazing little Irish band has been singing beautiful Irish folk ballads, and other old tunes for year [Honestly they have been around for so long they deserve one of those lifetime achievement awards] One might know them for their haunting piece "I Will Find You" from the Last of the Mohican soundtrack. I deeply with all my heart say that people should look past the showy, sex-appeal fueled image we look to day and back track to the beautiful classics let by artist like Clannad. Their music speaks to the soul, and preserves the beauty of many of our ancestors, including my own [I am part Irish after all] Either way, Siuil A Run, was the 2nd song [Use to believe it was the 1st because I had for the longest time believed "I Will Find You" was sang by Enya XD] I had heard form this band, and it was all that it took for them to land #22 on my favorite band list. That being said, this is one of the few songs that I play repeatedly and consistently throughout my life and NEVER get sick of no matter how many times its looped. [Some of you might be familiar with the Celtic Woman version, which is good in it's own right, HOWEVER it does not do the song any justice. Celtic woman renditions tend to ruin many great folk songs because they cut out the meat of the lyrics and are overly repetitive of the chorus and long instrumental breaks] That being said, How does it relate to my life?  So even though I am pretty anti-commercialized holiday in general, it can come as no shocker as to why I completely and utterly detest the upcoming Valentine's Day, on which the Corporate Universe takes advantage and makes money of the addicting drug emotion we call "Love". A heads up, my opinion on love is that the actually emotion that is to be associated with the word cannot truly be defined and if you must define it, you can not use such a "cute" word because in reality it is both a beautiful and horribly ugly thing. So I use another word to define it. Though the term I use is actually common, I choose not to reveal it. Since I like the fact that only a handful of people understand what I truly mean when I personally say it, since I say it with a literally meaning and it gives it an intimate authenticity that I would like to preserve. Any who, Ren-fest passed so it only seems about right to put an Irish love song, even if it is a bit tragic.

Okay Now for the overview of the Lyrics:

I wish I was on yonder hill
'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill,
And every tear would turn a mill,
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan

*-Chorus-*
Siuil, siuil, siul a run,
Siuil go sochair agus siuil go ciuin
Siuil go doras agus ealaigh lion
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan

I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel,
I'll sell my only spinning wheel,
To buy my love a sword of steel
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan.

[chorus]

I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red,
And 'round the world I'll beg my bread,
Until my parents shall wish me dead,
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan.

[chorus]

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
I wish I had my heart again,
And vainly think I'd not complain,
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan

[chorus]

But now my love has gone to France,
To try his fortune to advance;
If he e'er comes back, 'tis but a chance,
Is go dte tu mo mhuirnin slan

[chorus]

Chorus Translation :
Walk, walk, walk, O love,
Walk quickly to me, softly move;
Walk to the door, and away we'll flee,
And safe may my darling be.

So as you can see this is about a woman whose love is going to war, and she does all she can to support him. To be honest, when I first heard this song, I didn't know that's what it was about. I took it was a woman whose lover used her and ran away. Well looking at the lyrics, its easy to see why I did that [Actually its origins were never confirmed so who knows? I maybe right XD]. But still, I guess I can continue with this :3 The meaning of the song entirely [Or at least my misinterpretation of the lover running away an using her] touched my heart deeply. During times of heartbreak I felt like I could relate to such songs and Ye Olde Music is very good for them. Other songs which touch my heart as "Siuil A Run" had were songs like "The Blacksmith" and "If I Was A Blackbird" tragic love songs about loves lost and spited. But "Siuil A Run" was the first of its kind which I had heard. The message hit me harder than a 18 Wheeler hitting a 2 car sedan. I would cry and sing along to the lyrics and use it as a way to unleash all of my pent up and suppressed pain. There are two portions of the song which I can break down a bit. This is the chorus it self, and the  second to last verse.

The Breakdown:

"I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
I wish I had my heart again,
And vainly think I'd not complain,"

Yes this happens to everyone, where you keep grasping on to that hope that maybe something will happen maybe something will change. The majority of the time, it does not work out as such. I don't know how many times I regret a decision I've made and wished I could take it back or could change it. It's pointless to do it though, but we can't help but feel this sadness, this bitterness, this overwhelming emotion. I feel as if my argument is weak since right now I am not experiencing this as I was 3 months ago, when I first drafted this up. However I think a point is made.

''Walk, walk, walk, O love,
Walk quickly to me, softly move;
Walk to the door, and away we'll flee,
And safe may my darling be.''
[Translated Chorus]

No matter who you are, if the circumstance was not one of malace [which even in some chases isn't an issue either] you want the other party to be happy. You can be bawling you're eyes out miserable to the core, but you want that other party to be happy and joyous. Some might even want them to be joyous out of spite hoping that karma comes to crash them. In this case, to me it was more like how I feel. I can't hate the person if no one was at fault.

So that it, I think this is lacking a bit, and perhaps in the future I shall edit this. But for now enjoy the freebies that I included in here. Not only can you listen to the some, you can now DOWNLOAD as well :D I decided to include this to the segment E> Till next time...
